It is good to see the tradition of juniors playing for the Club in the U1500 is continuing with Fiona and Kevin Shen. My son used to do the same.

Round 2
U2000:
USYD 1.5-2.5 Norths
Ryde-Eastwood 1.5-2.5 UNSW
Harbord had the bye.

Norths lead with 5/8 after winning their first two games narrowly, but Harbord (3/4) and UNSW (2.5/4) have already had the bye. Ryde-Eastwood have begun with two close losses (3/8), while USYD (2.5/8) have been competitive but are 5th for now.

No players in the U2000 division have won both their games. Patrick Champion (Norths) has beaten Donato Mallari (2002) and drawn with Julian Kuan (2008) on Board 1.

U1700:
Norths 1.5-2.5 Ryde-Eastwood
UNSW 4-0 Harbord

UNSW have taken an early lead with 6.5/8 after a narrow win against a strong Ryde-Eastwood team (all players rated at least 1688) and a 4-0 win over Harbord. Ryde-Eastwood beat Norths to reach 50% (4/8), with Norths (3.5) just behind. Harbord drew with Norths in Round 1 and are on 2/8.

Three players - Adrian Miranda (UNSW), Clifford Tan (UNSW) and Christopher Ball (Ryde-Eastwood) have scored 2/2 so far.

U1500:
Optus 0-4 Norths
Macquarie Uni 1-3 Harbord Knights
Harbord Rooks 0.5-3.5 Ryde-Eastwood Checks
Ryde-Eastwood Mates 3-1 UNSW

The Ryde-Eastwood Checks are the only team to have won both their matches and lead with 6.5/8. UNSW, who lost 3-1 to the Checks, are 2nd with 5/8. There are three teams on 4/8.

Aaron Chin (Harbord Knights), Greig Edwards (Ryde-Eastwood Checks), Vince Chiara (Ryde-Eastwood Checks), Peter Zekic (Ryde-Eastwood Mates) and Ramon Lei (UNSW) have all scored 2/2.
Round 3
U2000
Harbord 1.5-2.5 Ryde-Eastwood
Norths 2-2 UNSW
USYD had the bye.

This competition continues to be extremely close, with only one game so far decided by a margin greater than 2.5-1.5. Norths lead with 7/12 ahead of Ryde-Eastwood (5.5/12), but Harbord and UNSW had already had a bye and were close behind on 4.5/8 (the two teams played last night and drew 2-2). USYD trails with 2.5/8 but have a strong team and will be looking to catch up when they visit Ryde-Eastwood tonight.

Patrick Champion has scored 2.5/3 on Board 1 for Norths, while Jonathan Yuen won his first two games on Board 4 for UNSW.

U1700
UNSW 3-1 Norths
Ryde-Eastwood 1.5-2.5 Harbord

Standings:
9.5 - UNSW
5.5 - Ryde-Eastwood
4.5 - Harbord, Norths

UNSW have a four point lead after the first leg of the triple round robin after winning their first three matches. Clifford Tan won his first three games for UNSW, while Egon Cardenas (Ryde-Eastwood) and Adrian Kong (UNSW) both scored 2.5/3 on Board 1.

U1500
Harbord Knights 2-2 Optus
UNSW 4-0 Harbord Rooks
Norths 1.5-2.5 Ryde-Eastwood Mates
Ryde-Eastwood Checks 4-0 Macquarie Uni

The Optus Chess Club scored their first Grade Match points in a 2-2 draw with the Harbord Knights. The Ryde-Eastwood Checks and UNSW are leading. In this division after all teams have played each other, the top four teams will play a round-robin finals series. Points from the preliminary stage do count in the final standings. Vince Chiara (Ryde-Eastwood Checks) is the only player who scored 3 points in the first three rounds.
Round 4
U2000
UNSW 2-2 Harbord
Ryde-Eastwood 1-3 USYD
Norths had the bye

Standings:
7 - Norths
6.5 - Harbord, UNSW, Ryde-Eastwood (Ryde-Eastwood have played one extra match)
5.5 - USYD

The top team had the bye this week, giving the other teams a chance to catch up. Neither Harbord nor UNSW could quite do so, a 2-2 draw putting them =2nd with one round left in the first leg of the double round-robin. USYD sent a strong team to Ryde-Eastwood and won 3-1, keeping them in touch with the leaders. The gap from first to last is just 1.5 points.

No players who have played more than one game have scored 100%. Patrick Champion (Norths) and Jonathan Yuen (UNSW) are on 2.5/3.

U1700
UNSW 1.5-2.5 Ryde-Eastwood
Norths 2-2 Harbord

UNSW finally lost a match, going down 2.5-1.5 to second place Ryde-Eastwood, but are still in the lead by 3 points. Harbord and Norths drew and are a further 1.5 points behind.

Egon Cardenas has scored 3.5/4 for Ryde-Eastwood, while Adrian Miranda and Clifford Tan have won all three games they have played for UNSW.

U1500
Norths 4-0 Macquarie Uni
UNSW 3.5-0.5 Harbord Knights
Ryde-Eastwood Checks 4-0 Optus
Ryde-Eastwood Mates 1.5-2.5 Harbord Rooks

UNSW and Ryde-Eastwood Checks extended their lead at the top. Neither team has yet confirmed their place in the finals, but have a chance to do so next week. It appears to be a four-way battle between the two Harbord teams, Norths, and Ryde-Eastwood Mates for the other two spots.

Four players - Vince Chiara, Fiona Shen and Kevin Chan (all Ryde-Eastwood Checks) and Henry Vo (UNSW) have scored 3/3 so far.
